Can I Replace My Roof During Winter?
Mar 01, 2017Most people think that a roof cannot be replaced during the winter months. While spring, summer, and fall are clearly more optimal seasons for roof replacement, it’s still possible to replace a roof in the winter. In fact, if you’re facing an emergency it’s best to have your roof fixed fast in the off-season, then holding off until a later date. However, you will need to be cautious and choose an experienced roofing company to complete the replacement. For example, if you are experiencing a leaking roof, it’s better to fix the problem when temperatures don’t dip too far below freezing. If not, your roof may suffer even more damage from leaks and expansion of ice as it freezes.
Can Any Type of Roof Be Replaced in The Winter?
Although replacing a roof in the winter is possible, it often depends on the type of material. Rubber roofs, for example, cannot be replaced in the winter. This is because rubber roofing materials rely on adhesive to be installed, and the adhesive won’t seal properly in cold temperatures.
Asphalt shingle roofs can be replaced in the winter, but only with extreme caution. The cold temperatures tend to make the shingles crack, and the adhesive used to apply the shingles needs the heat of the sun to seal. Asphalt shingle roofs that are installed in the winter tend to leak and the shingles may blow off more easily. Therefore, it’s usually best to wait until warmer months to replace this type of roof. However, if absolutely necessary, it can be done in the winter.
Other types of roofs, like PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin), can more easily be replaced in the winter. Metal roofs have no problem being replaced in the winter because the cold temperature does not affect the material.
