6 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Ice_houseRemember snowmaggedon in 2010? How about the polar vortex that made its way to DC and Maryland last December?

At Southernwood, we remember all too clearly. Consistently cold temperatures, wind and enough snow to build a small army of snow men. We’re planning ahead this year. To help you do the same, here are six tips to help winter-proof your home and avoid costly damage before it starts!

  1. Walk along the inside and outside of your home and check for any openings where heat can escape, filling holes with sealant to keep out the cold.
  2. Check for gaps surrounding window frames and glass—on the inside and outside of your home.
  3. Windows showing their age? Consider replacement windows. The right windows and installation can easily pay for themselves in energy savings.
  4. Check for light coming in around doors when closed. If light can get in, so can cold air. Use weather stripping or sealant to close any gaps, and consider adding or updating a storm door for enhanced protection against drafts.
  5. Make sure your ducts are clean, leak-free and well-insulated.
  6. Get your roofing and siding inspected by a professional. What starts as a small leak or other problem now, can quickly escalate after a few months of wind, weather and cold temps. A little prevention today will go a long way once winter settles in.
